MESSAGE FROM THE AVP

Dr. Mumtaz Cheema

Dr. Mumtaz Cheema, AVP Research & Graduation Studies

Our committed team at the Office of Research and Graduate Studies is thrilled to share exciting news about 2022 research projects and accomplishments.

This annual research report presents examples of the excellent work of our researchers from Grenfell Campus's schools and our colleagues at Western Regional School of Nursing.

The report also highlights the success of our graduate students and continuing development of graduate programming, specifically, 2022 was a special year in that regard - the 10th anniversary of graduate studies at Grenfell Campus. We marked the occasion with a celebration at our new Centre for Research and Innovation, which opened officially in January 2022.

To date Grenfell offers eight graduate programs:

Additional graduate programs are being developed, such as a proposed master's and PhD in Sustainable Rural Communities, in collaboration with other research centres specializing in rural, coastal and island community sustainability, and a master of fine arts (theatre).

The students in our graduate programs are an integral part of the work being conducted by Grenfell faculty and post-doctoral fellows. They are connecting with communities, organizations, businesses and industry, making a difference in the way these entities operate and interact with the world around them. In addition, the work of our graduate students supports our strategic research areas:

Our research funding profile continues to increase, moving from thousands to millions of dollars in the last five years. This is in no small part due to the continued support of our municipal, provincial and federal governments, whose support and advocacy are critical to our success as a research institution. And of course, our metrics would not show this growth without the efforts and accomplishments of our faculty – I applaud the hard work and energy they put into not only grant applications, but also the collaborations and scholarly activities that are the underpinnings of our success.

The growing research and graduate studies portfolios at Grenfell are supported by Grenfell's Research Committee, the Graduate Studies Working Group and the Research Ethics Board — I thank faculty for their great contribution and a valuable work on these committees. As well, the Office of Research and Graduate Studies team has worked tirelessly over the past year to support faculty and graduate students, and I thank them for their efforts and continuous support. I hope as you read the stories and information contained in this report, you will gain a sense of the strides we were able to make in strengthening our record of research excellence.

Please do not hesitate to contact the office with your ideas or feedback. And congratulations and thanks to all of our faculty, staff and students who have enabled us to share their, and in turn our, collective successes.
